And they approached the Highest Drop.
While talking to Uzma on the bus, I noticed that the weather looked awfully familiar to last year. It brought back an influx of random memories and moods from the distant past. I remember last year, the heavy rain caused Campeltown Mall’s roof to collapse, flooding of parks giving way to the new sport of “Park Surfing”, and the constant smell of damp jumpers.
It does seem that the past seems to catch up to you. For the past 2 weeks I’ve been listening to songs that I had long forgotten about since the first day I got given them. A lot of things tend to be put aside and priority situations take the better grip of us and over time we will forget our intended tasks and words that were never spoken. Forgetfulness is a funny thing, because, we never really forget at all. This time in Geography, Stephen Quoc and I were talking about some random subject and Quoc forgot something ( like a name ) and hes like ” Give me 10 minutes”. Me and Stephen laughed our heads off at Quoc because of it. Turns out, Quoc did remember what he intended to say a few moments later after many ” hmm’s..” and ” Wait!..”. It caused us all to burst out laughing again. Im not sure how he got it, but I tend to give up after the first 10 seconds, yet it comes back to me in the most inappropriate of times.
Our memories are very tricky figments of our brain. It controls our pattern of thought through deductive reasoning such as ” Well last time X happened.. so maybe if i repeat…X will happen again”. Memories are all virtual, virtual being that even if they’re real, there is always the chance of them becoming “distorted” or “demeaned”. Everything in our brains is virtual, having the ability to “erase” or “store” them for whichever purpose you chose to see fit. Turns out, we actually never forget things, we just don’t know what caused us to “remember” in the first place. Thus, it is a “theory” of mine that if we were to find an instrument to shock the Neurons or send signals, we may be able to “see” everything that has happened before our eyes either subconsciously ( we’re asleep and recall through a dream ) or conscious ( we are able to describe it in words clearly and definitively ).
That then makes it an issue of human values. The application of the technology could inflict serious psychological effects and may be used as an weapon or interrogation instrument – all uses of which are and should be considered inhumane. Then comes the choice of remembering.
Are we all that brave to remember? Or are we all too scared of our own experiences.
You’d Be Surprised.
